The Proud Will be Humbled

The Proud Will be Humbled
The text for this Sunday’s sermon is Isaiah 2:1-4:6 which you can read HERE.  Two chapters is more than Don typically covers in one sermon.  It will be helpful for you to familiarize yourself with the text today and over the next few days.

As you read, you may want to write down or mark
  • People names
  • Place names
  • Markers of time (then, after, when)

Remember the Divided Monarchy
  • After the reign of King Solomon, the kingdom of Israel split into two kingdoms
  • The southern kingdom is referred to as Judah
  • The northern kingdom is referred to as Israel
  • Israel can refer to either the united kingdom of twelve tribes or the northern kingdom
  • The capitol of the southern kingdom of Judah was Jerusalem
  • The capitol of the northern kingdom of Israel was Samaria
  • Zion refers to both the city of Jerusalem and Mt. Zion, the location of the first temple
  • The southern kingdom was comprised of two of the tribes of Israel: Benjamin and Judah
  • The northern kingdom was comprised of the remaining ten tribes of Israel: Asher, Dan, Ephraim, Gad, Issachar, Manasseh, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, and Zebulun
  • The northern kingdom was destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BC.
  • Isaiah was a prophet to the southern kingdom of Judah for about 40 years (circa 740 – 701 BC), including the period when the northern kingdom is destroyed
  • The book of Isaiah is a collection of Isaiah’s sermons
  • The sermons are arranged topically, not chronologically

Grace Discipleship: Pray for Unity in the Church

Lord God, Almighty, and Eternal Father:
We come before you from many and diverse stations in life. Grant us, Lord, that, despite our differences, we will be unified in you. In You we are one body made up of many different parts. We see the world from diverse aspects, but we seek to be one in our love for you. To share in your love towards us, and to love one another. Help us to grow in this love to become more Christlike . Father, grant us this blessing as we navigate through this life. In Jesus name, Amen. - Liz Adams
