Holy Monday - Judgement
And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. - Mark 11:15 ESV
People attempt to co-op Jesus to their particular social movement. Ironically, Jesus refused entering many of the social movements of his day. A brief review of his teachings will reveal a few things. He did not want people giving their lives over to sin. He knew the detrimental impact of sin on creation. Sin is a fundamental offense to created order. This offense always comes at cost. He cared so much for people that he called them out of their sin…and they usually obeyed.
Jesus was also extremely critical of fake religion. He was ruthless on the religious leaders who sought to limit access to God for personal, financial, or social gain. Over and over, he preached against false teachers and yeast of the Pharisees.
We often state that Jesus was harsher on the religious leaders than on the broken sinners. This is true. The truth is partially bound up in the response to Jesus. Sinners repented in the presence of Jesus, the religious leaders did not. Judgement is a consequence of consistently resisting Christ.
The Temple would be eventually destroyed. Many of the priests in the Temple were not killed by Romans, but by their own people (the Zealots). Judgement comes. The bill always comes due.
In what ways are you consistently resisting the call of Christ in your life? What would repentance look like for you? How have you suffered God’s judgement?
